My family lived in Nigeria in the early nineteen sixties and collected beautiful items. Some were bought in the markets and some were bought from a Hausa trader.
Adire cloth . Indigo dyed cloth made by resist dye method. Cassava starch paste is used to draw designs, and then cloth is dipped in indigo dye. Each piece of cloth is hand dyed. This is a large unused piece, made from 2 pieces sewn together. Olukun design, which means health and good fortune.
A mask carved for the New Yam festival in Afikpo. There is a complete set of these masks, used for a ceremonial dance. They were carved by hand, but have not been used, as they were purchased from the craftsman.
